Get answers to common questions about the Celestron StarSense Explorer LT 114AZ, a reflector telescope that uses your smartphone to help you find and view celestial objects.
Quick Answer
The Celestron StarSense Explorer LT 114AZ is a reflector telescope that pairs with a free smartphone app to help you locate stars, planets, and galaxies. It's designed for beginners who want a guided stargazing experience without a complex setup.
Why a Smartphone-Enabled Telescope Makes Sense
Traditional telescopes require you to manually star-hop or use a finder scope to locate objects. The Celestron StarSense Explorer LT 114AZ uses your phone's camera and the StarSense app to analyze the night sky and guide you to your target. This removes much of the guesswork, making it easier for beginners to start observing right away.
The trade-off is that you rely on your phone's battery and a clear view of the sky for the app to work. In very light-polluted areas, the app may take a bit longer to align. Still, for most backyard astronomers, the convenience outweighs these limitations.
Reflector vs. Refractor: What to Expect
The LT 114AZ uses a Newtonian reflector design with a 114mm (4.5-inch) aperture. Reflectors generally offer more light-gathering ability per dollar than refractors, making them good for viewing faint deep-sky objects like nebulae and galaxies. The shorter tube also makes the telescope more portable.
However, reflectors require occasional collimation (mirror alignment) to maintain sharp images. The LT 114AZ's mirrors are factory-aligned, and the collimation process is straightforward, but it's something to be aware of if you're new to this type of telescope.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How does the StarSense app work with this telescope?
- The app uses your phone's camera to take a picture of the night sky, identifies the stars it sees, and then shows you exactly where to point the telescope. The phone sits in a special dock on the telescope's mount, and the app displays directional arrows to guide you.
- Do I need to buy the app separately?
- No. The Celestron StarSense Explorer app is free to download for both iOS and Android. It works exclusively with StarSense Explorer telescopes and does not require a subscription.
- Can I use the telescope without the app?
- Yes. The telescope works as a standard manual reflector telescope. You can use the included 20mm and 10mm eyepieces and the red dot finder to locate objects the traditional way. The app is an optional guide, not a requirement. If you prefer manual stargazing, the telescope still performs well on its own.
- What can I see with the 114mm aperture?
- With a 114mm (4.5-inch) aperture, you can clearly see the Moon's craters, Jupiter's bands and its four largest moons, Saturn's rings, bright nebulae like the Orion Nebula, and some brighter galaxies like Andromeda. Faint deep-sky objects will appear as dim patches, not like photographs.
- Is the telescope easy to set up?
- Yes. The alt-azimuth mount is simple to assemble: attach the tripod, mount the optical tube, and slide in the eyepiece. The entire setup takes about 5-10 minutes. The app alignment process adds another minute or two.
- Does the telescope come with a tripod?
- Yes. The package includes a sturdy steel tripod with an accessory tray. The tripod height is adjustable, and the mount has slow-motion control cables for fine adjustments.
